A garda has been arrested in connection with an alleged sexual assault.
The officer, who has been suspended from duty, was detained by staff from the Garda Siochana Ombudsman Commission (Gsoc) on Tuesday morning.
He was taken in for questioning at Loughrea Garda Station in Co Galway.
The garda is the first member of the force arrested by the ombudsman's office in the five and a half years it has been in operation.
A spokesman for Gsoc confirmed a member of the force had been taken in for questioning.
He is being questioned about an allegation that a woman was raped about one year ago in the Midlands.
He was being detained under section four of the Criminal Justice Act and is assisting the ombudsman with inquiries, a spokesman said.
