Baby's death at hospital examined

The baby was born at Cavan General Hospital last week and died in the specialist neonatal unit at the Rotunda Hospital in Dublin

Health chiefs have launched an investigation into the death of a baby at a national neonatal unit.

The Health Service Executive (HSE) expressed its deepest sympathies to the family of the child, who was born at Cavan General Hospital last week.

It is understood the infant was ill when he was born and he was subsequently transferred to a specialist neonatal unit at the Rotunda Hospital in Dublin.

"As is normal procedure, the HSE will closely examine the circumstance of this case," it said in a statement.

"A clinical incident review is being planned which will involve a multi-disciplinary team reviewing all aspects of the care provided in this case."

The HSE offered its support to the child's family and the coroner has been notified.
