These apps can be a huge help planning a holiday, from getting there to finding your way around

Trip Advisor

iOS, Android; free

Unless you know exactly where you’re going and what you’re doing, it’s foolish to embark on a holiday without first consulting Tripadvisor. It’s one of the most useful travel review resources on the web, with thousands of customer-rated hotels, restaurants and destinations. The app is easy to use and has most of what’s on the website.

B&B Ireland

iPhone; free

An alternative to hotels or trendy apartment rooms is the traditional B&B. This app outlines pricing, location and other details for around 1,100 of them. It also lets you call right from the app.

aMetro

Android, free

This handy app shows you the metro, subway, bus and rail maps for 180 cities worldwide. When the app is downloaded, it gives you a menu of countries and cities to choose from.

Google Translate

iOS, Android; free

This translates words and phrases from one language into another. Including Irish, 69 languages are supported. Of these, about 20 can be ‘spoken' (not Irish, unfortunately).

City Maps 2Go

iOS, Android; from €2

If you need a city map but don’t want to use your phone’s data when abroad, this is a great app. It allows you to download dozens of city maps, free, for offline viewing.

XE Currency

iOS, Android; free

For immediate currency calculations and up-to-the-minute rates, this is a quick, simple app.

Hotel Tonight

iOS, Android; free

This hotel-booking service is aimed at booking on the day you need the hotel. It offers a few high-end options, with which it negotiates special deals. It covers Dublin, the ‘West Coast’ and the ‘South Coast’.

Expedia

iOS, Android; free

Expedia is a good bet when you want to find flights and accommodation abroad, especially between US cities.

Trivago

iOS, Android; free

Trivago compares over 100 booking websites and collates the best deals it can find. In this way, it aggregates the biggest variety of options on a single screen.
