Fellow analyst John Giles believed that Everton defender Seamus Coleman was the best Irish performer during last night's 1-0 defeat in the Ernst-Happel-Stadion in Vienna and Irish fans also disagreed with Whelan's selection.

The Leeds United midifielder did have one of his better displays for Ireland, breaking up numerous Austrian attacks and being pretty solid in possession but is not a favourite among some Irish fans who believe Wes Hoolahan should be starting in front of Green.
