Nearly one in 20 British holidaymakers will have returned home with a sexually transmitted disease contracted while on holiday this summer, a survey has shown.

As many as 23% of people admitted to having had sex with a stranger on holiday, the poll for price comparison website Travelspec.com found.

Of these, 3% thought they had slept with someone but could not really remember because they were too drunk.

The survey, based on responses from 6,000 people, also showed that 10% of men, but only 4% of women, had sex on a plane.

A total of 35% got drunk every night when away, with 40% of men and 32% of women admitting to having had sex on the beach.

Travelspec.com managing director Rafi Neumann said: "We go on holiday to let our hair down and perhaps do things that we'd never consider at home.

"It would appear that some holidaymakers are taking this a little too far and coming back with souvenirs they didn't bargain for."

Athens burns as politicians vote

The historic vote paves the way for Greece's European partners and the International Monetary Fund to release 170 billion euro in new rescue loans, without which Greece would default on its mountain of debt next month and likely leave the eurozone - a scenario that would further unsettle global markets. Politicians voted 199-74 in favour of the cutbacks, despite strong dissent among the two main coalition members.
