Giant tuna fetches fortune in sale
Tuesday January 05 2010
A giant bluefin tuna fish has fetched 177,000 US dollars (£110,000) at Japan's first auction of the year.
Officials at Tokyo's Tsukiji market, the biggest fish wholesale market in the world, said the 512-pound tuna was the priciest since 2001, when a premium tuna brought an all-time record of 220,000 US dollars (£137,000).
Japan is the world's biggest consumer of seafood.
Some 80% of the world's Atlantic and Pacific bluefin tuna, the two species most sought after by sushi lovers, are consumed in Japan.
